Grzegorz Sęk
He was the EAAE National Representative in Poland until recently. From the EAAE we would like to pay this small tribute in gratitude for his enthusiastic work.
“Grzegorz Sęk lived for 79 years, studied astronomy at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. During his rich professional career, he worked at the OAUJ in Kraków and the Tadeusz Banachiewicz Observatory in Lubomir, but ultimately devoted his professional life to the Youth Astronomical Observatory in Niepołomice, where he gained a reputation as an excellent teacher, tireless educator and populariser of space science. In the last years of his life, he served as president of the Polish branch of the EAAE.
Astronomy had been his passion since his school days. He understood the importance of education in teaching it like few others. He became famous, among other things, as an organiser of workshops and training courses for teachers, sky shows, planetarium sessions, and summer camps for children and young people. He was a member of the Polish Astronomical Society and the Polish Meteorite Society, a regular attendee and speaker at various astronomical conferences and space events. He worked with children until the very end. As he himself emphasised, the work of an astronomer is above all satisfying, and the greatest joy comes from watching students develop their interests and passions. He passed away suddenly and too soon, with many plans still ahead of him... May his memory live on”
