The European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere (ESO) is an intergovernmental European organisation for astronomical research. It has thirteen member countries. ESO operates astronomical observatories in Chile and has its headquarters in Garching, near Munich, Germany. The aim of ESO Educational Office is to provide support in astronomy and astrophysics education, especially at the high-school level. This includes teaching materials, courses for teachers and specific educational projects.
The European Association for Astronomy Education (EAAE) is the first all-European network for teachers interested in Astronomy. The EAAE-Working Group Summer School (EAAE-WGSS) has organised each year a Summer School since 1997.
Both institutions, ESO and EAAE, organised the 2nd ESO-EAAE Summer School in order to offer teachers access to specific research, to new educational materials and methods and the chance to exchange experiences. This Summer School was open to all secondary school teachers working in European countries.
